The Politehnica subway station was built in 1983, during the country’s communist rule. The pieces that workers used for the pavement are actually fossilized prehistoric organisms called rudits, dating from the Upper Cretaceous period. The marble was extracted from Apuseni, Gilau Mountains (Western Romania) where approximately 65 million years ago, in Cretaceous period, the area was covered with water, and thus all the fossils we see on the station’s pavement are marine creatures like seashells, snails, corals and algae.
